How we research and review appliances
The criteria Appliance Insider uses to research new appliances, compare models, and recommend tools and supplies.
What we evaluate
- Reliability signals: design simplicity, known failure points, and recurring issues documented in manufacturer service bulletins and recall notices.
- Repairability: parts availability, whether common failure parts are user-replaceable, and service access.
- Efficiency: ENERGY STAR certification and published energy and water use.
- Real-world fit: dimensions, installation requirements (venting, water lines, gas, electrical), and noise.
- Value over time: warranty terms and expected maintenance, not just purchase price.
Research vs. hands-on testing
Most of our product coverage is research-based: we compile manufacturer specifications, manuals, warranty documents, and recall data. We only publish a numeric rating when we have evaluated a product against the criteria above, and the article says so. We never present research as hands-on testing.
Tools and supplies
When a guide mentions a tool or supply (for example a dryer vent brush or a genuine-brand water filter), we prefer manufacturer-genuine parts and widely available tools, and we note compatibility limits. We verify that each product listing is live when it is added and recheck links when an article is updated.
Prices
We do not print prices, because they change constantly. Product buttons link to the retailer's current price.
