Bosch 500 vs. 800 Series Dishwasher: Is CrystalDry Worth the Upgrade?
Bosch 500 vs. 800 Series dishwashers (SHP65DM5N vs. SHP78DM5N) compared on drying, noise, racks and wash features, plus who should buy each one.
Pick the Bosch 800 Series (SHP78DM5N) if you wash a lot of plastics or want the quietest model, and pick the 500 Series (SHP65DM5N) if you mostly wash ceramics and glass, want Zone Wash, or find it for noticeably less. On the current pocket-handle models, the two share the same size, 16-place-setting capacity, water and energy use, leak protection, and Wi-Fi. The real differences are drying (CrystalDry versus AutoAir), noise (42 versus 44 dBA), the third rack, and the wash system.
This is a research-based comparison built from Bosch’s own spec sheets and product pages. We have not tested either dishwasher hands-on, so there are no ratings or verdicts here.
Which models are we comparing?
“Bosch 500 vs. 800” covers several generations and handle styles, so model numbers matter. This comparison covers the current 24-inch stainless steel, pocket-handle, top-control models:
- 500 Series: SHP65DM5N (also sold in white as SHP65DM2N and black as SHP65DM6N, per Bosch’s spec sheet)
- 800 Series: SHP78DM5N
Don’t confuse the SHP78DM5N with the older SHP78CM5N. Bosch still lists the CM model, and its product page describes PrecisionWash with PowerControl and an EasyGlide rack system, features the DM-generation spec sheet does not list. Check the full model number, including the “DM” or “CM” letters, before you buy.
As of Oct. 5, 2026, Bosch.com lists the SHP65DM5N at $1,249 and the SHP78DM5N at $1,399, a gap of $150, with both shown as out of stock on Bosch’s site. Retailer prices change often, especially around sales events such as Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days (Oct. 6 and 7, 2026), so compare current listings yourself.

Drying: AutoAir vs. CrystalDry
Drying is the main reason to step up to the 800 Series.
AutoAir (500 Series) is an option that automatically releases the door at the end of the cycle, letting moisture escape and fresh air in. It’s simple and works best on materials that hold heat, like ceramic and glass.
CrystalDry (800 Series) is Bosch’s patented system that, in Bosch’s words, “transforms moisture into heat.” Bosch says it gets dishes, including plastics, 60% drier than Bosch dishwashers with PureDry. That figure is Bosch’s own claim, based on an aggregate average across a combined load of plastics, glass, steel, and porcelain, and Bosch notes that drying performance varies by dish type.
Plastics are the hard part for any dishwasher, because they don’t hold heat the way ceramic does. If your racks are full of food-storage containers, kids’ cups, and travel mugs every night, CrystalDry is the feature most likely to change your routine. If you mostly wash plates, bowls, and glasses, AutoAir may be all you need.
Noise: 44 vs. 42 dBA
Bosch rates the 500 Series at 44 dBA and the 800 Series at 42 dBA. Both are low numbers, quiet enough that Bosch gives each one an InfoLight so you can tell it is running: on the 500 it shines on the floor, and on the 800 it is a light bar below the handle. The 2 dBA difference is most likely to matter in an open-plan kitchen next to a living area. In a closed kitchen, either one is quiet.
Racks and loading
Both models have three racks and Bosch’s RackMatic rack adjustment, and the capacity rating is the same 16 place settings.
The difference is the top rack. The 500 has a standard 3rd rack. The 800 has a Flexible 3rd Rack with fold-down sides, which Bosch says adds 30% more loading area compared with a Bosch dishwasher with two racks. If you load bulky utensils, ladles, or ramekins up top, or want to fold the sides down for taller items in the middle rack, the flexible rack is easier to work with.
Wash systems: Zone Wash vs. PrecisionWash
The 500 Series lists Zone Wash, which Bosch describes as an intensive wash focus area with 3x more water power for stuck-on food. On this model, you turn Zone Wash on in the Home Connect app rather than on the control panel.
The 800 Series lists PrecisionWash as its wash system. Its spec sheet doesn’t list Zone Wash among its options. If you regularly wash baked-on casserole dishes and like the idea of aiming extra power at one area, that’s a small point in the 500’s favor.
Both have Speed60 (a one-hour wash), an NSF-certified sanitize option (certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 184), and app-only Delicate, Rinse, and MachineCare cycles.
Reliability and repairability
Because the two models share so much, their reliability profiles should be similar. They have the same tub material, the same AquaStop leak protection, the same power and hose specs, and the same list of optional install accessories on their spec sheets. The 800’s CrystalDry system is one more component than the 500 has, so if long-term simplicity matters most to you, that’s worth weighing.
Warranty. Bosch’s US warranty page lists, for dishwashers:
- 1 year of parts and labor on the entire appliance
- Parts-only coverage on electronics (microprocessor or circuit board) in years 2 through 5
- Parts-only coverage on racks (not rack components) in years 2 through 5
- Lifetime parts-only coverage against rust-through of the inner tub liner and the stainless steel door
Bosch’s product page for the SHP78DM5N also notes that the model has earned the Good Housekeeping Seal, with a two-year limited warranty from Good Housekeeping. Read the warranty statement in the Use & Care manual for your exact model before you count on any specific coverage.
Owner maintenance. Whichever series you choose, routine filter cleaning and knowing how to clear a clog matter for long-term performance. Both models also offer Bosch’s MachineCare cleaning cycle through the Home Connect app. Our guide to a dishwasher that isn’t draining walks through the checks, and our maintenance calendar shows how often to do them.
We found no Bosch service bulletin or recall for either DM model as of this writing. You can check any model number on the CPSC recalls site. For typical lifespans, see our appliance lifespan chart.
Installation requirements
Installation is identical for both models, according to Bosch’s spec sheets:
- Required cutout: 33 7/8” H x 24” W x 24” D
- Electrical: 120 V, 60 Hz, 12 A, 1,440 W, with a 67-inch power cord and 3-prong plug included
- Hardwiring: possible with Bosch’s optional junction box (SMZPCJB1UC)
- Water: minimum water pressure of 14 psi
- Drain hose: 78 3/4 inches, pre-connected
- Connections: all at the rear of the appliance
Because the two have the same overall dimensions and cutout, either one fits the same 24-inch opening. Bosch notes that you should consult the installation instructions for final dimensions before making a cutout.
Choose the 500 or the 800?
Choose the Bosch 500 Series (SHP65DM5N) if:
- You mostly wash ceramic plates, bowls, and glass, which dry well with AutoAir
- You want Zone Wash for baked-on pans and casserole dishes
- The 800 isn’t on sale and you’d rather keep the difference
- You don’t need the fold-down sides on the third rack
Choose the Bosch 800 Series (SHP78DM5N) if:
- You wash a lot of plastic containers, cups, and lids
- You want the quietest of the two (42 dBA) for an open-plan kitchen
- You want the more flexible third rack for bulky utensils
- You find it at or below the 500’s price, which can happen during sales

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Bosch 500 and 800 Series dishwashers?
On the current pocket-handle models, the SHP65DM5N (500 Series) and SHP78DM5N (800 Series) share the same size, capacity, water use, energy use and Wi-Fi. The 800 adds CrystalDry drying instead of AutoAir, runs at 42 dBA instead of 44 dBA, and has a Flexible 3rd Rack with fold-down sides. The 500 lists Zone Wash, which the 800's spec sheet does not.
Is Bosch CrystalDry worth it?
CrystalDry matters most if you wash a lot of plastic containers, because Bosch says it gets dishes, including plastics, 60% drier than its PureDry system. If you mostly wash ceramic plates and glass, the 500 Series AutoAir option, which opens the door at the end of the cycle to release moisture, may be enough.
Is the Bosch 800 Series quieter than the 500 Series?
Yes, slightly. Bosch rates the SHP78DM5N (800 Series) at 42 dBA and the SHP65DM5N (500 Series) at 44 dBA. Both use an InfoLight indicator so you can tell when the dishwasher is running.
Do the Bosch 500 and 800 Series dishwashers fit the same cabinet opening?
Yes. Bosch's spec sheets list the same overall dimensions for both, 33 7/8 by 23 9/16 by 23 3/4 inches (H x W x D), and the same required cutout of 33 7/8 by 24 by 24 inches. The 800 Series model is heavier, at 96 pounds versus 85 pounds.
What warranty do Bosch dishwashers come with?
Bosch's US warranty page lists one year of parts and labor on the entire dishwasher, parts-only coverage on electronics and racks in years two through five, and lifetime parts-only coverage against rust-through of the stainless inner tub liner and stainless door. Check the warranty statement for your exact model.
